“Herbs aren’t just for cooking,” Cheri Woodard explained as she set up her projector for a slide presentation on ornamental herbs. Cheri is the proprietess of Faith Mountain Herbs in Sperryville. “Many people like the appearance of herb plants but don’t want to change the way they cook, or don’t have any interest in the medicinal uses of herbs.” she said.
Herbs lend subtle color and shape to an ornamental garden. They are easy to grow and many of them may be dried. Cheri pointed out a side benefit: “Herbs are becoming so popular that there’s a whole category of crafts called herbcraft - wreaths, potpourri, arrangements.”
Cheri’s shop in Sperryville will have a variety of herb plants for sale at the proper planting time. She suggested that someone interested in an ornamental herb garden visit the Arboretum or the National Cathedral in Washington. Cheri will also be glad to show visitors her herb garden when it begins to mature in May.
