a number of occasions, as everyone knows. I do not believe either, whatever others may think, that basketball players or any group of students should be favored in discipline cases. The charges of discipline discrimination have not been on the basis of race but as between different children on other bases and regardless of race. This must not, cannot and will not be. No boy or girl is accountable for the name and situation of his or her parents. He or she does have the right to expect and get fair and impartial treatment because we respect the law and because of the simple love in our hearts for children — all children. But each boy and girl, indeed each of us all (including parents) is accountable for his or her personal conduct. That is also the law and the gospel.
“Take a long and hard look” at our disciplinary system (item 3)? Yes, m’am. Mrs. Frye and all others can rest assured that this concern is being addressed right now, with specific action.
“Take a long and hard look” at our drug and Alcohol Policy itself? No, m’am. We have just done it. Our Policy was constructed in early 1980 after long and arduous work and input. It has the assent and represents a concensus of this community, with the voice of the people heard loud, clear and in writing. It is firm and it is fair. It has just been re-affirmed by the Board in its current and general policy review. It says plainly to the school children and their parents:
“The purpose of the public schools is to educate the children and we, as a School Board and in representation of the tax paying community at large, will not allow that purpose to be sabotaged by gin, vodka or drugs on the school grounds. ”
Let’s all try to hang together and cooperate to make more effective what is, in truth, the loftiest, most nobile, public endeaver we have in this or any county.
