A mechanic’s'lien falls under the general category of judgements, and means that people who have furnished labor and materials in order to build something have a claim on the property. The right to file this lien is given by statute, and the contractor or laborer could get one on property if the owner doesn’t pay him for work performed. It is, in a sense, much like a mortgage, and in some states it can be foreclosed.
