For beginners, Cheri recommends tucking a few herbs in with flowers in a bed. “They really have an advantage over most perennial plantings,” Cheri said. “When your flowers bloom and die, you’re left with a gap in your bed or border. When the herbs finish flowering, the foliage remains attractive.”
Cheri recommends that beginning herb gardeners start with plants rather than seeds. “And I can’t overemphasize the importance of preparing the beds,” she said. “You’ll be able to feed your perennials on the surface, but you’ll never again be down around the roots.” She would choose a spot in the sun, well-worked with sand and compost or manure added. “Allow plenty of room for your plants,” she warned. “Herb plants can grow tremendously in one year, so leave them space.”
