Summer Legumes such as cowpeas (Blackeye peas) can produce excellent growth and provide nitrogen to subsequent crops. Avoid the ironclay variety because of the hard seed but most other varieties should work well.
Alfalfa can be established on the conservation area. However, since it cannot be harvested during the
summer, plans should be made for its establishment in late summer. No-till plantings can be successful when made in small grain stubble, or in other cover that has been properly killed .
Red clover is probably the most desirablejegume to seed this spring for cover and nitrogen-fixing. It is easily established, grows from early spring until frost, and will still be available for cover the second growing season if desired. It does not become a weed, is easily killed before next spring’s crop, and can be utilized for grazing this fall. It also should provide 75 to 100 lbs.
