Shooting ranges are now allowed in Rappahannock County by special use permit but a 500 foot setback requirement endorsed by the planning commission and accepted by the board of supervisors over opposition effectively sets minimum lot size for a range at 32 acres.
At their March 7 meeting, the supervisors considered three zoning ordinance amendments which would permit ranges in an agricultural zone: one proposed by attorney Peter Luke on behalf of Robert and Ruth Bowers, proprietors of Blue Ridge Guns in Amissville; the second from the planning commission and a third “amended amendment” with variations suggested by Commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas Baumgardner.
The amendment initially formulated by the planning commissioners put setback distance from adjoining property lines at 500 feet for a range. In a letter dated December 15., Baumgardner questioned the “reasonableness” of requiring that distance and warned that it “may well become an issue
