and southern New Jersey. In the 16-18 age group, Hansen was one of three from the Blue Ridge District to qualify for the race. On his way to the race at Elk Mountain, Pennsylvania, Hansen was trapped in the “blizzard of ’83” for 25 hours. As a result, he missed the opportunity to qualify for the Pennsylvania State team which competes in the Eastern Junior Olympics.
The Wakefield racing team is managed by Frederick Andreae, a US Ski Association-trained coached. Andreae is a Wakefield parent and architect in Front Royal. The team’s six members were chosen from the top skiers of the 159-member Wakefield Ski Club. In addition to Hansen, Morgan Andreae, and Ruth Holliday, the team included Douglas Voeks, 17, of Washington, Daniel Holliday 16, of Middletown, and Timmy Andreae, 9, of Bentonville.
