If you have signed up for the payment in kind (PIK) program, these suggestions may help you meet the setaside and conservation requirements and, at the same time, make the best use of your land.
The requirements for conservation are general and allow many alternatives provided the soil is well pror tected. With adequate planning, the conservation use land can be used to establish forage seedings, reduce problems with weeds difficult to control in crop production, and/or produce winter grazing.
Wheat planted in the fall of 1982 on PIK land can be utilized for hay or silage but it must be cut by June 1, 1983.
Wheat makes fairly good hay when cut at the boot stage and excellent silage if it is cut and wilted before chopping. Wheat stuble can be utilized in the fall or notill seedings of forages such as alfalfa, red clover, crimson clover, and/or grass mix
