Heavy rains Friday poured three inches of rain on Rappahannock’s fields and foothills, running off into swollen streams and causing flooding of roads and bridges.
Rappahannock Sheriff W. A. Buntin said that no weather-related injuries or traffic accidents were reported although many areas were flooded for a time on Friday.
In Washington, low-lying fields became lakes, and water collecting in low spots spilled over to bring high water right up to the door of the Edward Bailey home in town.
Both bridges at Rock Mills had water running over them and the stretch of road between them was completely flooded, although it was reported later that the bridges themselves were not seriously damaged.
On the road between Washington and Sperryville, high water did not impede traffic but caused cars to pass through several inches of water before the bridge under construction at the temporary light.
The highway department reported Route 603 and 644 washed out at Slate Mills and route 638 near Washington and 606 near Flint Hill flooded for a short time.
