Cool temperatures and a following wind blowing south over Fodderstack made Saturday’s classic the fastest in five years. Men’s open winner, twenty-yearold Kevin Matthews, broke away from a field of 271 entries—the largest to date— to finish at the courthouse in Washington 32 minutes, 45 seconds after the start in Flint Hill. Matthews, who came to Rappahannock from Winchester, shaved almost two minutes off the time of Doug Wood, the 1981 winner and course record holder.
Marti Nelson, last year’s women’s winner; bettered her own time and the previous course record by over three minutes.
Course records were set throughout the age groups: first-time entry Ronnie Atkins set a record in the 13-18 class with an excellent finishing time of 36:40. Tracee Butler, the girls’ winner in this group, bettered the 1981 time by more than eight minutes when she finished in 47:08.
Sheree Waggoner, running in the new subdivided class of 25-29, set a combined record for the old 1929 class at 45:38, more than two minutes faster than the 1980 record set by Katie Judd.
