Gov. Robb’s
Home Run

Gov. Chuck Robb’s appointment of John Charles Thomas to the state Supreme Court will, without question, go down in the history books as one of the most significant initiatives of his administration.
Mr. Thomas, at 32, will be both the first black to sit on the Commonwealth’s high court, and the youngest member to be appointed to the Judiciary since the administration of Thomas Jefferson two centuries ago. He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Justice Carrington Thompson who stepped down March 1.
In the past Gov. Robb has come in for considerable criticism from political observers - including this one - for seeming to waffle when he is faced with politically sensitive choices. Certainly such a charge cannot be made in this case. To use a baseball analogy, the governor stepped up to the plate and slammed this particular ball over the centerfield fence.
