Owings, third place in the twelve and under class; Scott Keithley and Ricky Shaw, high school track stars who finished second and third behind Ronnie Atkins in the 13-18 class; Merle Strange, second in the 30-34 class; Mary O’Meara, third in the 35-39 women’s class; Jane Batchelder, second in the 50-59 class; and Pauline Bruce and Carla Eugster, second and third in the 60 and over class.
Mary O’Meara and Merill Strange deserve special mention. Both have previously won the Eva B. Smith memorial award and they finished within five seconds of each other, Strange just a few months after having her first baby. They were 11th and 12th in the women’s overall competition. Both improved their prior winning times but were hurt by the larger and faster women’s field.
Other Rappahannock women deserving mention are Rush River Cooperative member and well-known quilter, Jinny Beyer, who finished sixth for the women after only a few months of running; Ann Spieker, RCHS track coach w’ho finished in 51:34; and Jeannie Harrison, who finished 14th at 51:12.
