Sometime ago, a gentleman of the county said to me, “Bob Eastham, schools are taxes and taxes are schools. Don’t you ever forget it.” Well, 1 haven’t forgotten it but I’m not exactly sure what I’m supposed to do with it! One could interpret what was said several ways:
1. The school budget is about 75 percent of the county’s total budget and must be kept down to keep taxes down, and/or,
2. Public services, especially schools, should be financed by those who use them, and/or,
3. The taxpayers are paying more and more for less and less in the education of school children and this rip-off has got to be brought under control.
As for the first interpretation, I am in general agreement but w ith this proviso: that the funds proven to be necessary for a sound education of our 1,000 school children must be provided by our taxpayers, or else we should dis-establish Rappahannock on its 150th anniversary and turn over our public affairs to some neighbor which can handle them more responsibly.
