In the 30-34 age category, last year’s open wanner Larry Forrester’s finish in 34:14 not only w'as faster than his 36:51 which won the race last year, it was over a minute faster than the combined category record set in 1980. His counterpart in the women’s race, Naoe Hiruta, set a new record for 30-34 with her finishing time of 46:53.
Eva B. Smith memorial winners had to run faster this year to Win the coveted award. Frank Reynolds won his third trophy in this category by setting a record for Rappahannock men at 36:08. Betty Settle, in her first Fodderstack, came in five minutes faster than any Rappahannock woman to date at 44:46. Settle was wdthin a half-minute of veteran, locally-famous first and second place woman runners, Marry Nelson and Peggy Smith.
In the under-twelve category, Kati Arnold improved her 1981 time by almost 20 minutes with a finish of 56:21. Wilma Albrecht was the fastest woman over sixty ever to run the Fodderstack, posting a time of 74:39.
