If everything works out, Chris will stay on as permanent staff this fall. It’s proof that C ETA’s youth employment program works!” reported a delighted Camille Harris, one of the satisfied employers in the summer job program.
Harris, director of the Child Care and Learning Center, commissioner of revenue Merle Scoggins, the county social services department, the Rappahannock Historical Society and the schools provided supervised employment for 14 young people who met income eligibility requirements to participate in the CETA program. Again this year, the summer youth employment component was administered by Fauquier Community Action under a $225,000 grant. Over 160 youths were served, according to Norma Gibbs, CETA director. Counselor Liz Eastham was the supervisor for the 14 young men and women from Rappahannock.
In addition to providing employment for up to 40 hours per week at minimum wage ($3.35 per hour), the program is designed to give participants job seeking skills. The young people take an inventory of their own talents, learn to write resumes and take part in mock job interviews. “We do an employability development plan. It’s essentially a map on how they can obtain their goals—career and educational,” Gibbs explained.
“They get four days of training, two days of it with a professional consulting firm,” she added.
After two weeks on the job, an evaluation is done on each CETA participant, Eastham noted. “Then we can try to correct any problems.” Again at the end of the summer employment program, a second evaluation is conducted.
Those evaluations should show top notch workers, judging by the employers of the CETA kids who tell the story of another summer success.
