In supporting a motion to approve the change, school board member Paul Nichols said, “I don’t want to see the fees go up, but Miss Piper has done a lot of research and if it has to be done, it has to be.”
School board member Nancy, Reeve, while voting for the increase, suggested that the board discuss the possibility of funding part of the book cost at future budget planning sessions. She said she didn’t think it was fair for parents to shoulder the entire burden of ever increasing book prices.
The increase was approved unanimously as well as a sliding scale for the high school. Previously, high school students were assessed $27 per year to cover book costs. Now the amount will depend on the combination of courses each student takes. It will cost $4 per year per hard cover book.
