Desiree Poehler is working at the commissioner of revenue’s office for her fourth summer. “She does typing, filing and real estate cards, takes personal property, deals with the public. She can do almost anything,” reported Merle Scoggins.

“Beautifully, she’s just doing beautifully,” said office manager Marie Davis of Angela Jordan, the welfare department’s clerical worker. “She does typing and filing, answers the telephone, anything we ask her to. It’s been tremendous having her help because we have a lot of paperwork,” said Davis. “And Angela’s still smiling. That’s sometimes hard to do when you’re buried under a mountain of papers.”

And the employees, have they benefited as well? Angela Jordan has “definitely polished her typing and secretarial skills,” Davis said. “And she’s helped us polish ours,” she added, chuckling.

Chris Lillard has a permanent job with his summer employer, proof positive that he’s gained job finding and holding skills. Ginnie Hickman says she’s learned a lot about children from working at the Child Care and Learning Center. She’s learned about teaching as well—enough to know positively that she doesn’t want to be one, an opinion shared by co-workers Pat and Ann McKenzie. All three of the young women feel that they’ve learned more about people and life. “And how to be a mom,” the McKenzie sisters chimed in together. They’ve also mastered the tricks involved in writing a good resume and presenting themselves in the most positive light to prospective employers.
