The number of elective courses a student can submit to make up the 20 or 22 credits now to be required has been reduced so, for God’s sake and that of the children, we are not going to continue to spend 2'/> million dollars each year to teach them, are we? The reasonable solution is clear: determine exactly how much teacher time and classroom space will be required to handle the additional academic courses now required, then cut out an equivalent amount of teacher time and space devoted to "busytime” electives which have no place in a decent school district in the first place. Some different teachers? Maybe. Additional teachers? Forget it!
From all of this we must now conclude:
—that the present leadership of the public schools in this county is incapable of rescuing our school children from our own “rising tide of mediocrity;”
—that these “leaders" become nervous and insecure in any discussion or with any decision involving solid academic instruction;
—that these “leaders” can understand only one theory of public instruction, that of the lowest common denominator;
—that wherever their hearts may be, their vision is blurred.
We should remember the Proverb of Solomon: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
