Bird added that her educational priorities include special education and the arts. She pointed out that the commission neglected to mention the fine or performing arts and said that when she was teaching she found the arts “a tool for educating and a liberating force.” Many “brilliant, but psychologically disturbed students” can be reached through art, music or drama classes, she said.
