something be done about the noisy window units in the upstairs courtroom. It seems that the long-standing sound and fury of summer trials is about to be ended by central air conditioning. The supervisors were unanimous in agreement that the judge had a legitimate complaint. They agreed that the public had a right to be irritated at the poor acoustics. They voted at once to solicit bids for installation of central air conditioning in the courtroom.
This is an instance where speaking out has preserved freedom. For as that fine Virginian said in 1788, “There are more istances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by the violent and sudden usurpation.”
Sometimes the silent encroachments aren’t really intended. They only seem to be silent because of the noise from the air conditioners. We’re glad the judges and supervisors were able to raise their voices above the hub bub and be heard.
