to be, in his words, “quantative, rather than qualitative.” The commission suggested longer school years as a possible way of improving American schools, adding additional courses, and requiring more time be spent of basic skills such as science, math, and reading. Estabrook says more time in the classroom doesn’t necessarily mean more will be learned.
Said Estabrook, “We can’t do a total turn-around overnight.” However, he shared several basic educational philosophies that he wanted the school board to consider:
1) that there should be frequent and monitored homework.
2) that there should be regular and frequent monitoring of student progress.
3) that there should be a well coordinated curriculum, with no duplication or overlap, but a good connection between various subject areas.
4) that there should be a variety of “teaching strategies”, one of the most effective of which would be strong student involvement.
Estabrook said he would bring a list of names of those previously serving on the superintendant’s advisory group so the matter could be discussed again during a meeting set to interview candidates for the assistant principalship at the elementary school.
Assistant Principal Search
When Tom Campbell was chosen to be assistant superintendant, it left a vacancy at the elementary school. Estabrook says he received seven applications by monday’s deadline, four from men and three from women. Estabrook says none of the applicants is presently employed in the Rappahannock system.
Estabrook said the small number of applications is due to the time of the year, when it would be difficult for employed educators to ask to be released from their contracts to make the job change. However, Estabrook said he was “not discouraged by the number.” The school board reviewed the applications in executive session.
In a rare event, Estabrook read a thank-you letter from Hubert B. Eckard, Jr., one of the unsuccessful applicants for assistant superintendant. Chairman Massie commented that it was the first time she remembered such a courtesy.
Those who were hired, Rappahannock’s new teachers, will start orientation August 16. New teachers will receive two days of orientation now rather than just one as previously. Estabrook says he especially wants to discuss the ideas of testing. “There should be a going-tpgethemess” of education, according to Estabrook, and not a sudden review before exams. Testing should take place at a level of day-to-day instruction, Estabrook says.
