Obviously the procedures being followed are unsatisfactory. Dates have not been scheduled so as to allow travel time. No set standards for scoring or rating the candidates have been set and no format for appearances and presentation worked out, as was done in presidential debates of 1980 between President Carter and challenger Reagan although the preliminary agreements did not go so far as to ban the use of pilfered, pinched or pirated briefing papers.
The 1980 debate format which worked fairly well for the Republicans even in the pre-convention period, because there were marked differences between the three principal contenders— Ronald Reagan, George Bush and John Anderson— is not as applicable to the Democrats now in their field.
Their differences are more subtle, and difficult to debate. Some are highly subjective, differences of intensity, of desire for the office, of loyalty to party, of compassion, of love and attachment to former Democratic presidents and presidential candidates, of compassion, of caring: Or if not qualitative, varying only in quantitative measure.
This latter competition might be formalized, and run in the manner of a country auction with the award going to the highest bidder.
