Eastham then got involved with the lumber business himself and became A popular leader in the area. Not only did he found the city of Davis, he also led the drive to establish two new districts in the county — Fairfax and Davis — and later, on August 1, 1893, he led an armed party of 200 men from Parsons and Davis on an expedition to “steal” the court house and county seat from the town of St. George and move it to Parsons.
Earlier that spring, a referendum to relocate the court house and county seat to Parsons had carried with 1,100 votes in favor and 514 against. The court entered an order for the move, the transfer to take place on August 7. The contract for moving the county property, including records, safes and furniture, eight miles from St. George to Parsons was awarded to the Poling brothers, whose winning bid for the work was $120.
The fued between St. George and Parsons over the location of the county seat had been going on since early 1889 when the first petition for relocation was filed.
After the referendum carried, the leaders of St. George began a series of legal moves in late July, 1893, to block the transfer, obtaining an injunction from Charleston against the move. “This infuriated the good people of Parsons and
