The image of the grandparent’s house in the country is a comforting picture to American families.
Many of the elderly living in rural Virginia fit this image, but for others the picture is not so cheery, said W. James McAuley, director of Virginia Tech’s center for gerontology.
“The incidence of poverty is disproportionately higher among the rural elderly than among the urban elderly,” said McAuley.
“In fact some of the guidelines from government agencies seem to assume that farm families need less money to live. Some agencies would have two guidelines—farm and non farm—and the farm was always the lower amount,” said McAuley.
What permits the rural elderly person to continue a rural lifestyle is the informal support of family and friends, said McAuley. In a study he conducted with elderly persons in Virginia, McAuley noted that the “findings offer evidence of the importance of family and friends as service providers.” Family and friends

Duracell Offers
Scholarship

Young people in grades nine through 12 are eligible to enter the second annual Duracell Scholarship Competition to encourage scientific creativity among high school students.
The competition involves students’ designing and building battery-powered devices that have practical functions. Awards include one $10,000 college scholarship, five $3,000 scholarships, 10 $500 scholarships and 25 $100 prizes.
Each entrant must submit a photograph and onepage description of the device on an official entry form no later than March 1, 1984.
