Recalling the old saw that once a guy hits bottom, there’s only one way but up, state agriculture commissioner S. Mason Carbaugh said next year’s farm income figures wall probably be better.
The other side of his story uras that Virginia net farm income showed a loss for the first time since official records began in 1949. Carbaugh said the 1983 year would go dowm as one of the worst years in history because of the unusually wet spring and the hot dry summer. Yields for potatoes, com, soybeans and peanuts were reduced by 40-50 percent. Total cash receipts from marketing crops and livestock w'ere 12 percent below the 1982 level; apples were projected to be only slightly below' the $45 million in statewide 1982 revenue.
