(Continued on Page 1 ) pledging a continuation of current controlled growth policies, the state of the public schools became the central issue. Incumbent Clarence Baldwin won reelection over write-in candidate Diane Wood, a former teacher, by a three-to-one margin. Nelson Lane, Stonewall-Hawthome’s appointed representative on the School Board, took the seat vacated by retiring incumbent H. B. Wood. The closest race came in Jackson District where J. R. Latham, 12 year veteran and the Board of Supervisors’ current chairman, held off challenger Butch Zindel by just five votes.
In addition to the list of winnters, the big story from the 1983 elections was voter turn-out. A near record 76 percent of those registered cast ballots and a drive conducted the month before by registrars Ruth Kilby and Majorie Atkins upped the percentage of registered voters from below 60 percent to 71 percent of those eligible, one of the best records in the state.
