William C. Vernam, forester for Rappahannock and Fauquier counties, reports that now is the time for landowners to order tree seedlings for planting in the spring of 1984. “Landowners should look at their properties nowr with the view to planting trees next spring”' Vernam recommends.
Thirteen species of trees are being raised in Division of Forestry Nurseries for spring planting in 1984. Loblolly pine, white pine, shortleaf pine. Norway spruce, Scotch pine, black locust, bristly locust, black walnut are among the species available for Christmas tree, timber production and soil erosion control. Wildlife species include autumn alive, Virginia shrub lespedeza and sawtooth oak. Seedling prices range from $18 to $150 per thousand trees with approximately 800 trees needed to plant an acre of open land. Planting site recommendations are available upon request.
