Soak a bag of black-eyed peas on New Year’s Eve in a Dutch oven full of cold water. (If you forgot to start early, they may be brought to a boil on New' Year’s Day, removed from the heat, and allowed to soak in the hot w'ater for an hour.)
Throw in your old ham bone and a cup of cooked, chopped ham. Salt and pepper to taste. Boil the blackeyed peas for a couple of hours on low heat until they are almost done.
