7. Academic attainment by the young people of Rappahannock County was another of the top stories for 1983. In March, Rappahannock County High School’s team of four advanced to the semi-final round of Pop Quiz, WVPT public television's academic competition.
Released in June, results of standardized achievement tests administered across the country showed Rappahannock County High School’s 11th graders performing above the national norm while fourth and eighth graders demonstrated marked improvement compared to the previous year’s scores.
Tenth graders at the high school were near the top in Virginia’s minimum competency testing program, according to results announced in August. Statewide, only Craig County and Buena Vista City bettered Rappahannock’s 98.7 percent passing mark.
Honors weren’t confined to the public schools. The Talisman, the literary magazine, published by Huntly’s Wakefield School, took first place honors in Columbia University’s 60th annual nationwide competition among secondary schools.
