Court House

Alerted by letter from senior Circuit Court Judge Carlton Penn on the need for improvements in the county court house, the county supervisor met in October with Penn and judges Burke Hertz, John Alexander and Shore Robertson to discuss a renovation project. The judges asked for a quieter air conditioning system, rearrangement of witness seat, more privacy and better sound proofing in the room for sequestered jurors, carpeting in the courtroom and a witness room other than the downstairs hallway for those w'aiting to testify. The board agreed to work with the judges to finalize plans for the improvements.
Weather
9. People always talk about the weather and in 1983 there was plenty to talk about. The year started off on a w'hite note with a Record snowfall of 30 plus inches in February. Gusts of 20 to 25 miles per hour created near blizzard conditions and kept highway crews out battling the drifts around the clock for three days.
Next the county dripped under a wet spring that gave Rappahannock half its yearly rainfall — 20 inches — in under three months. Then after delaying the planting of crops, waiting for fields to dry, farmers suffered through a hot, dry summer that led to a drought disaster declaration here.
