.shoe box full of scraps and we’d make quilt squares from them. That’s how I learned.

“We didn’t get sick then - I don’t now why. I think the food was cleaner and the air was cleaner. I don’t think there was such a need for disinfectant. To clean, my mother used lye soap, baking soda, vinegar. Sometimes I saw her cleaning a scorched pan with ashes from the fireplace.

“I just don’t know how they did it. I saw my mother sit down at dinner but that was about the only time.”
