Woodward noted that dispatch radios will be connected the first week of January, sheriffs office phones in the renovated jail hooked up on January 3 and dispatch lines in operation by January 23. At that time, Rappahannock residents who now go through Culpeper dispatch to reach emergency services for Amissville, Washington, Flint Hill and Castleton as well as those who call Sperryville will use 987-8525 to contact fire and rescue units. Residents of Chester Gap and Huntly will be able to call 635-4488 for the same central dispatch.
Freeze Waived
In a piece of good news from Richmond, Woodward noted that he has also received approval to hire a new deputy to fill the post he holds until sworn in as sheriff at the end of this week. The state has a 45-day freeze currently in effect. “If a deputy quits or is fired, you have to w’ait 45 days before hiring somebody else. That’s how the state saves money. But since I’m moving up to take a higher position, they’re letting me hire my replacement right away,” the sheriff-elect explained.
