The region experienced its coldest Christmas since 1872. National Weather Service forecasters told reporters for the Washington Post that the nation’s capital could expect temperatures to drop to a record five degrees below zero on Christmas Eve. The wind chill was expected to hit 40 below.
Spokesmen ait Shenandoah National Park say temperatures at Big Meadows fell to 15 below on the 24th, 11 below on the 25th.
Weather watcher Dennis Wingfield says it was two degrees below zero on Christmas morning in Sperryville. In fact, Wingfield says this Christmas was exactly 50 degrees colder than last year. This year’s high on Christmas day was 13 degrees; Last year, it went up to 63, Wingfield says.
