Mailbox Vandals Still Sought
The damage by vandals of 15 mailboxes in the Castleton-Rock Mills area August 6 or 7 cost residents some $300 in damages, Sheriff John Henry Woodward reported August 9. The Sheriffs department still is investigating the incidents.
The sheriff theorizes vandals began their spree in Castle ton on State Route 618, continued to Hope Hill, to Route 626 in Rock Mills, then U-tumed on 626 to Route 619 in Laura Mills.
The culprits left a clear path of destruction, the sheriff said, stopping to twist off and toss aside mailboxes primarily on the passenger side of the vehicle used by the vandals. Other damage to signs also was reported.
There were no witnesses, or as yet, none have come forward. MI can’t believe someone didn’t pass a car or hear something,” Sheriff Woodward said.
The sheriff is hoping for more clues from area residents; the department examined the mailboxes for fingerprints but to no avail. Any vehicle descriptions from area residents may help, the sheriff said.
Anyone who traveled those routes between 8 p.m. and 12:15 a.m. that Monday night/Tuesday morning may have passed the car of the perpetrators. The sheriff believe several people took part in the vandalism. He can be reached at 675-3331.
