More Americans watched the just-completed Olympic Games in
Los Angles on TV than any other program in television history. And for most Americans, watching the games was time well spent in front of the tube.
Forget that some of the ABC’s commentators either talked too much or made such though tAd comments as "nice dive” or "another win for us,” as if they sacrificed years of free time to train with the athletes. Forget that the closing ceremonies took what seemed like “all night long,” to quote singer Lionel Ritchie.
Forget also the complaints of critics that some American athletes didn't deserve their successes and their medals, because they didn’t compete with Soviet and many Eastern-bloc athletes. While the Soviet-led boycott of this year’s games may have made a difference in some Olympic sports, it still doesn’t overshadow the overall improvement in the quality of amateur athletes the U.S. now sends to the Olympics and other international sporting events.
