Apples, for example, exhibit alternate bearing - a heavy crop one year followed by a light crop the next year. During a heavy bloom year, up to 90 percent of the bloom must be thinned off to ensure that the tree puts energy into the production of flower buds the following year.
Even if trees flower, they do not always set fruit. The general cause of this is lack of pollination. Pears, most apples and some plums are cross-pollinated. This means that bees mu«* carry pollen between trees of the same 'kind of fruit but of different varieties if fruit is to set.
Fruit may also fall from the tree while small or just before it ripens. It is normal for small small fruit to drop. This is pwticulary common with plums and peaches.
