“Were trying to give people a chance to do something different,” said Carolyn Szabad, director of Volunteer Services. “In this kind of a camp we stress success — making or doing things that perhaps some of these people have never done before.”
Szabad said the campers were playing games — wheelchair as well as regular volleyball, swimming, canoeing, boating and fishing — as well as arts and crafts.
So enthusiastic and receptive is the community to this effort that volunteers haven’t been a problem. Boy scouts and girl scouts, 4-H members, the local NAACP, staff members of the various agencies and sons and daughters of staff members helped throughout the two soggy days.
