About ten years ago, far-sighted Virginians began planting wine grapes again—in Charlottesville, Middleburg, Culpeper and later, in Rappahannock. Although still in its infancy, the Virginia wine industry has produced wines that have won medals in italy, California and New York. Today, Virginia is second only to New York in wine awards east of the Rockies.
Experts expect the industry here to keep growing. There are 24 bonded farm wineries, 122 commercial-size vineyards and 1,00P acres of grapes in the state.
Will wine-making become a significant industry in Rappahannock? We have one established winery here— Farfelu, in Flint Hill—and every year more Rappahannock land is bought with grape cultivation in mind.
Although grapes of some type can be grown almost anywhere in Virginia, experts look carefully for land that has been producing peaches. There is a remarkable similarity between the soil and climatic requirements of the two fruits.
