Culpeper Promotes ‘Scenic River’
Culpeper County formally has invited Fauquier and Rappahannock Counties to cooperate in seeking designation of the upper Rappahannock as a State Scenic River.
In letters written August 13, Culpeper County Planning Commission Chairman Stuart Caldwell explained, “Because numerous water project proposals are surfacing across the State, particularly for nuyor water supply diversions, we feel it is imperative that we act to protect this resource. We believe that Scenic River Status can provide such protection for the rural interests of the headwaters area.”
According to an information sheet prepared for landowners, scenic status does not restrict farming practices or control use of land along a designated river. But it would require General Assembly approval of any proposal for a dam or interbasin transfer of water. Furthermore, the Governor would appoint a committee of local people to be notified about and review federal or state plans that might affect the present condition of the river.
Culpeper has scheduled a public information meeting on-scenic rivers at the County Board of Supervisors Room, 7:00 p.m., August 22.
• Wakefield Soccer Practice Set
Prospective varsity and junior varsity soccer players should report at 5 p.m. August 29 at the Wakefield auditorium, according to a press release issued by the school.
All athletes should come prepared to practice and should have a certified current physical exam. Ninth graders are eligible to participate on the varsity and J. V. squads.
Practice will be from 5-7 p.m. each day as the team works toward the season opener in September.
• Don’t Forget Fee Day
Fee day will take place at Rappahannock High again this year, Principal Robert Chappell announces. Fee day will be Tuesday, August 21, from 1-4 p.m.
Students grades 8-12 and/or parents may come by the school to pay for books and insurance, pick up class schedules and books, rent locks and so forth, Mr. Chappell says.
At Rappahannock’s Elementary School, fees will be collected and books issued on Wednesday, August 22. Fees are the same as last year |22 for grades K-3; $32 for grades 4-7.
