Approval of special-use permit. James V. DeBergh of Harris Hollow applied for a special-use permit to construct an office building on Gay Street The 17,226 square-foot rectangular lot is located across from the Washington Baptist Church.
DeBergh explained his intent to purchase the property, build a threebedroom home with “colonial atmosphere” on the site, then use the home, possibly with three offices, to conduct his frozen-fruit business.
DeBergh said he currently conducts this business out of the same office building as town attorney Baumgardner.
Council members expressed several concerns about the request, among them: Commercial use of a residential property, protection of the residential character of the neighborhood and intensity of the use proposed by DeBergh.
