It was at this time he first became acquainted with a sideline that was to increase his appreciation of the game. He played in the grass court tournament circuit in Britain, and came away with a fondness for this version of the sport as well as an appreciation for the gentlemanly, social approach to tennis that he found overseas.
“That’s not always true here,” he observed. ‘Tennis players there are not pushed as much as our athletes are. Everyone is expected to enjoy the game.”
His summer experience in England gave him an idea for a special sort of tour—a tour he half-jokingly labeled the “cultural-historic tennis tour.”
“My idea was to assemble a team of younger athletes and enroll them in a tour of grass court competition in the summer. I would play as well as coach,” Harris said. “When we weren’t playing, we would visit galleries, museums and other places of interest. It was a perfect combination.”
