Washington residents who are thinking about retiring at the end of the year should start making some serious plans now, Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper, said recently.

Those plans should include Social Security, Hundley said. There are a number of things a person should consider.

First, a person under age 65 considering retirement should remember that his or her Social Security benefit will be permanently reduced if he takes benefits before age 65. The amount of the reduction depends on the number of months he takes benefits before age 65.

The reduction amounts to 20 percent at age 62 and is reduced only for each individual month he takes it prior to age 65.

Other factors can influence a person’s decision to retire, Hundley said. Availability of a company pension could be a factor. So could a person’s ability to continue working.
