Leslie Christopher Smith was found guilty during Tuesday’s Gen, eral District Court of reckless driving after testimony by State Trooper H.A. Newlin.
Trooper Newlin testified that he was driving towards Front Royal on Route 522 on Oct. 16 in an unmarked “enforcement” vehicle when he observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction.
“I turned around and caught sight of the vehicle again at the top of the mountain,” Trooper Newlin said. “My vehicle was up to 100 miles per hour, but he was still pulling away from me.”
He said the motorcycle turned on to Route 665, and the driver attempted to go around a curve.
“There was some gravel on the curve, and he hit it going too fast,” said Trooper Newlin. “He lost control and went off the road, through a grassy area and came back out on Route 522 where he stopped.”
He said he did not think Smith ever saw the red, flashing lights in the grill of his vehicle until he had stopped.
When Smith asked Trooper Newlin about the 100 mph speed, Trooper Newlin said there was no speeding charge because there was not time for a pace. “The reckless driving charge is not for speeding but for failing to negotiate a curve and running off the road,” Trooper Newlin said.
Judge John Alexander found Smith guilty and fined him $50 in addition to $20 costs.
