Whitehouse admits that problems of Piedmont conservation were not foremost in his thoughts before his retirement, although he’s owned a house near Rectortown for 25 years.

“I must say we were terribly preoccupied with explosive situations abroad,” he said. “But in those three decades tremendous changes were taking place in the Piedmont and in America, changes perhaps more obvious to one who was coming and going. My God, the Cuyahoga River was actually on fire! People were waking up and realizing that something had to be done. I felt very strongly that I should do something for this area after spending most of my adult life overseas.”
