The young boys playing stickball one last time before the winter settled in also kept Lucas up nights; even the neighorhood cop wouldn’t silence the boys. I., fact, one night, gumshoe Barney O’Flaherty joined the boys for an inning or two.
Whatever went on, Lucas saw it —he hated everything he saw, mind you, but he recorded it all.

I tapped lightly on the front door of his apartment. I seemed like the exact moment my skinned knuckle hit the wooden door, I heard a thud, then a crash inside the apartment. The door unlocke 1, I walked in, gun drawn.
Lucas was standing maybe 10 yards from the kitchen sink throwing a heavy meat cleaver against the unspackled wall. Broken dishes were strewn in the sink and about the floor, knocked from their perch by the impact of the heavy blade against the wall.
