LuLu knew the street the way everyone knew LuLu: from the center line out. If there was something to be found on the street, LuLu would have heard about it by now.
I met her under a street light, the fog rolling in with the early breeze.
“Hello, LuLu,” I said, turning up the collar of my trenchcoat against the fog and mist.
I lit two cigarettes simultaneously and offered one to LuLu. “Have a smoke, baby doll.”
“Hello, cop,” she answered in a sexy, almost inviting voice. “I don’t smoke no more.” She was student of the street, all right.
I smoked both cigarettes. I was also in a hurry to get to the bottom of the case. It was getting boring and I needed to make points with my captain. Besides, the night air was cold under this awful, dim street light. And my throat was getting dry from smoking two cigarettes.
“Hey, toots, I need to know...”
She knew immediately was I was after. “I know immediately what you’re after,” she said, pasting a sneering smile across her face, weather-beaten by the long nights on the street.
I told her I just came from seeing Lucas and that he refused to talk. I saw a pattern developing in this case. “Things could go rough on Lucas,” I said.
“Lucas hates you, you know,” she said, turning her face to the fog. “And I can’t help you, either.”
