Apathy was the big news to come out of last Wednesday’s political forum: row after row after row of folding chairs sat empty in the elementary school auditorium. In fact, discounting relatives of the candidates and members of the Rappahannock County Woman’s Club, which sponsored the event, probably fewer than 10 people came to hear and question the office seekers.
Eight years ago, there was standing room only when the Woman’s Club held its forum at the Flint Hill fire hall; four years ago, when the forum was moved to the bigger RCES auditorium, every seat was taken.
What happened this year?
Some blamed it on the absence of a countywide race. (All the constitutional officers - Treasurer Frances Foster, Sheriff John Henry Woodward, Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke and Commissioner of Revenue Beverly Atkins - are unopposed.)
Some blamed it on game four of the World Series which began at 8 p.m. the same night.
Others attributed the poor turnout to an overdose of local politics. (Educational issues were addressed at the PTA forum held two weeks ago while the four candidates from Jackson District took the stump at a fracas at the Amiss ville fire hall just three days earlier.)
And still others thought folks might be busy
