Although the political pundits and armchair analysts are finding next Tuesday’s election a tough one to call in Rappahannock - uncontested races aside - there seems to be a feeling that the contested campaigns, which feature two write-in candidates for supervisor, will mean a large turnout of voters.
“The write-ins have generated a lot of interest,” said Marjorie Atkins, the county’s Assistant Registrar of Voters. “The candidates have been out working, knocking on doors and urging people to vote.”
She reported that registrations were brisk right up to the Oct. 3 cutoff date for eligibility. She added that some part-time residents of the county have also switched their legal residences, and thus their vote, to Rappahannock. One man, Mrs. Atkins said, came in to the registrar’s office not too long ago and told her that he wanted to re-register here “because he felt that in Rappahannock County his vote counted.”
