Compulsive gamblers: Theicfe are now 13 million compulsive gamV biers in the United States, and their number is growing as state-sponsored gambling entices and teaches more people to gamble. The Walt Street Journal reports that embezzlement and other crimes grow .
Organized crime: The former chief law enforcement officer of Connecticut states that organized crime grew in strength and power. Already Virginia’s state police report that Mafia interests are buying land1 in Virginia speculating that casing gambling will come next. ■ •
Profits go out of state: In 11 of the last 12 lottery states, Scientific* Games, a subsidiary of Bally, has. contracted to run the lottery. Bally, runs casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Scientific Games contributed $2 million to the California referendum and won a $40 million contract in the first year to run th'd lottery. The big profits are in run*' ning the lottery, and Scientific Games has a virtual monopoly.
It is important that we 'consider these facts as the time for voting on this issue is at hand. We can eithef vote “no,” sit at home and do nothing^ or vote “yes” for it. To not vote is surely a “yes” vote and the lottery will take effect on Dec. 1 - if wer don’t get out and vote against it. „.<[
