David Chuse, president of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection and a long-time recycling advocate, noted that Southern Scrap in Winchester will provide a tractor-trailer for paper and will remove it when full. (The company is now paying 75 cents per 100 pounds for recyclable paper.) Southern Scrap also buys glass; Reynolds Aluminum, which will soon open a collection station in Warrenton, pays for aluminum, "one of the highest priced materials,” according to Mr. Chuse. Other private salvage businesss nearby take everything from batteries to iceboxes, he noted.
Recycling pays
Fauquier County provides a yecyding case study "right next door,” Mr. Chuse continued. The Lioness Club there set up a six-month demonstration project to show that recycling would work. The initial idea was that the county would take over the center at the end of the trial.
A station was put at the dumpster in Marshall. The county employee who polices the dumpster site agreed to regularly break up the glass deposited in the recycling barrels so they could hold a greater volume and bring more from Southern Scrap when full. "In return, he gets a little bit of money from the glass sales,” Mr. Chuse noted.
